Krispy Kreme

imageKrispy Kreme Doughnuts, Inc.

Krispy Kreme Doughnuts, Inc. is an American global doughnut company and coffeehouse chain based in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. Krispy Kreme is to become a privately held company owned by JAB Beech, itself a private German investment firm. Krispy Kreme founder Vernon Rudolph bought a yeast-raised recipe from a New Orleans chef and, in 1937, rented a building in what is now historic Old Salem in Winston-Salem, and began selling to local grocery stores.

In the United States, Krispy Kreme's products are sold via their own outlets as well as through grocery, convenience stores and supermarkets. They are also available in other countries through various channels.

The company's growth was steady prior to its initial public offering but profits have decreased in recent quarters.

On February 24, 2015, Krispy Kreme opened its 1,000th shop in Kansas City, Kansas.

In 1933, eighteen-year-old Vernon Rudolph began working for his uncle, Ishmael Armstrong, who owned a small general store in Paducah, Kentucky that sold a wide variety of goods, including its very popular doughnuts. While the exact origin of the doughnut recipe remains partially a mystery, it is believed that Ishmael Armstrong was inspired by an Ohio River barge cook named Joseph LeBeouf who was famous for his light and fluffy doughnuts.

The store struggled during the Great Depression, so in 1934, Vernon and Ishmael decided to move to the larger city of Nashville, Tennessee where they hoped business would be better. The uncle and nephew focused solely on selling their doughnuts and opened "The Krispy Kreme Doughnut Company" in a rented store on Gallatin Road. The shop did so well that Vernon's father, Plumie, also left Kentucky and moved to Nashville to help sell doughnuts.

In 1937, Vernon Rudolph opened his own store, deciding on Winston-Salem, North Carolina for the location when he learned that his favorite cigarette company, Camel Cigarettes, was headquartered in the small North Carolina city. Rudolph primarily sold to convenience stores; however, he also sold hot doughnuts to individual customers who came during production time between midnight and 4 am. The first store in North Carolina was located in a rented building on South Main Street in Winston-Salem in what is now called historic Old Salem. The Krispy Kreme logo was designed by Benny Dinkins, a local architect. The first Krispy Kreme bakery outside the South opened in Akron, Ohio, in 1939.

Little Chef

image Little Chef

Little Chef is a chain of roadside restaurants in the United Kingdom, founded in 1958 by entrepreneur Sam Alper, and modelled on American diners. It specialises in the "Olympic Breakfast", its version of a full English and "Jubilee Pancakes". The restaurants are mostly located on sites on A roads, often paired with a Travelodge motel and a petrol station. They used to be on motorways in Moto Services but were removed in 2009.

The chain expanded rapidly throughout the 1970s and 1980s, largely organically, although in 1986 it acquired Happy Eater, its only major roadside competitor. It peaked in numbers in 1999 - 2000 with 439 restaurants, but restructuring has seen this reduced to 71. The Little Chef brand has been in decline for many years, largely due to a lack of investment, a tired menu, increased competition, and predominant use of motorways rather than A-roads for long-distance journeys.

Little Chef has been owned by six different companies since its mid-1980s heyday. It was owned by Trusthouse Forte from the 1970s, who were taken over by Granada Hospitality, a division of Granada plc. then being 'spun out' into Compass, who themselves sold the chain to the private equity firm Permira. They subsequently divested the chain to The People's Restaurant Group, who in turn sold the chain to the business turnaround specialists RCapital. Planned and reactive investment in the fabric and infrastructure of the chain ended with the sale from Forte, which may explain why many of the interiors appear to date from this, early 1990s, era. In July 2013 RCapital sold LittleChef to the UK arm of Kuwaiti-owned Kout Food Group. In February 2017, Kout Food Group sold Little Chef units along with other roadside units but the Kuwaiti based company retains the Little Chef name.

Pret a Manger

imagePret a Manger

Pret a Manger /ˈprɛt ə ˈmɑːnʒeɪ/ is a sandwich shop chain based in the United Kingdom.

Pret A Manger was founded by Julian Metcalfe and Sinclair Beecham. They opened their first Pret A Manger shop in July 1986, located at 173 Victoria Street in London. Beecham and Metcalfe met while studying at University. Their company claims they "created the sort of food they craved but could not find anywhere else."

The name, from the French prêt à manger, meaning ‘ready to eat’, was inspired by a French delicatessen Metcalfe and Beecham saw that had closed down on Hampstead High Street owned by Jeffery Hyman.

The pair pioneered Pret’s menu of freshly made natural food and are still significant shareholders in the company 30 years on.

In 2001, McDonald's bought a 33% non-controlling stake in the USA branch of the company, which they sold in 2008 to private equity firm Bridgepoint Capital, owners of clothing retailer Fat Face.

In 2011, its sales were £377 million.

The menu includes sandwiches, baguettes, pots and desserts, cold drinks, hot drinks, crisps and bakery items, as well as sushi, salads, soups, and cakes.

The company emphasises the use of natural ingredients and advertises all sandwiches are made on the day of purchase in a kitchen at each location (with the stated exception of a few small outlets). Food left unsold at the end of the day is collected by charities. Sandwiches are packaged in paperboard rather than sealed plastic.
