Queensland Brewery Ltd

Queensland Brewery Ltd was a company that operated a brewery in Brisbane, Queensland, Australia.

Originally, the brewery was based at Bulimba (now known as Teneriffe) on the western bank of the Bulimba Reach of the Brisbane River and was known as the Eagle Brewery. In May 1883, Messrs Tooth and Company sold the Eagle Brewery and Sugar Refinery to Mr Huesman and partners for £15,500.

In August 1884 at the Brisbane Exhibition, the Queensland Brewing Company Limited won prizes for its draught malt ale, draught XXX ale, draught porter, bottled malt ale and bottled porter.

The Queensland Brewery Ltd company appeared to be established in 1888 (its 25th annual report being released in 1913). At some point, it was renamed Queensland Brewery. In 1901, it was producing draught beer as well as two bottled beers known as "Silver top" and "Gold top".

In 1906, it relocated to Brunswick Street, Fortitude Valley (a landmark observed by motorists as they entered the Story Bridge from the northside).

In the early 1940s, the company built a new headquarters and wine and spirit store at 501 Ann Street in Fortitude Valley. Designed in the Functionalist style with Art Deco motifs, the Queensland Brewery Company Building is now listed on the Queensland Heritage Register.

In 1961, the company was taken over by Carlton & United Breweries in 1961. In 1993 the brewery was relocated to Yatala in 1993.

Skinny Blonde

imageSkinny Blonde

Skinny Blonde is a low-carb blonde ale started by The Vines drummer Hamish Rosser, winemaker Richie Harkham and artist Jarod Taylor. The beer is currently sold in Australia, and took home the 'Peoples Choice' awards at the 2008 Australian Beer Festival held at The Rocks in Sydney.

In June 2009, Skinny Blonde attracted controversy across Australia over its beer bottle packaging which - through the use of modern ink technology - has a 1950s style pin-up girl called 'Daisy' on the beer bottle label slowly revealing herself as the beer level drops and the bottle temperature rises.

The label has angered some health and women's groups who claimed, "This is another blatant example of the alcohol industry objectifying women to move product". Women's Forum Australia spokeswoman Melinda Tankard was quoted as saying: "This is demeaning, inappropriate and troubling." Rosser responded, "This generation of Aussies have grown up on the beach and topless girls in bikinis are commonplace. The label and website is in no way meant to offend women or anyone else, rather embrace the Australian beach culture." He was also quoted as saying that the beer was "just a bit of cheeky fun."

The much smaller Oban Bay Brewery in Scotland, which started production in 2009 using a 5 barrel plant, also produce a blonde ale called "Skinny Blonde".

South Australian Brewing Company

The South Australian Brewing Company, Limited, was established in 1888 by the amalgamation of Sir Edwin Smith's Kent Town Brewery and W. K. Simms's West End Brewery. T. A. Nation was the first brewer and G. B. Bryant the general manager. His board of directors comprised S. J. Jacobs (later Managing Director), Sir Lancelot Stirling, K.C.M.G., Edward Fitzgerald, LL.D., and H. W. Morphett.

The Torrenside Brewery at Southwark, (pronounced SUTH-uk, now Thebarton, pronounced THEB-uh-tun) on the banks of the River Torrens north-west of the city centre producing "Southwark" beers, was founded by A. W. & T. L. Ware in 1886 and became the Walkerville Cooperative Brewery in 1898. This business was taken over by the South Australian Brewing Company in 1938.

The West End brewery was closed between the wars, and the operations consolidated with the Southwark brewery operations at the Thebarton site.

According to legend, the black and red colours of the SA Brewing Company came about after the West Adelaide Football Club (whose colours are black and red) defeated Port Adelaide in the 1909 South Australian National Football League (SANFL) Australian rules football Grand Final. The legend states that, had West Adelaide not won the match, the brewery's colours would have become the black and white of Port Adelaide.

West End Draught remains the largest selling beer in South Australia. West End Draught is a currently a 4.5% abv pale lager, first brewed in 1859. The brand is actively involved with the SANFL, was the original sponsor of the "Showdown" in the Australian Football League, and is one of the sponsors of the "Slowdown" charity football match. The tradition of painting the Thebarton brewery chimney with the team colours of the SANFL premiership finalists began in 1954.
