It was during the late 1890s that the idea was formed. The India Coffee House chain was started by the Coffee Cess Committee in 1936, when the first outlet was opened in Bombay. In the course of the 1940s there were nearly 50 Coffee Houses all over British India.Due to a change in the policy in the mid 1950s, the Board decided to close down the Coffee Houses. Leopold Cafe

imageLeopold Cafe

The Leopold Cafe and Bar is a large and popular restaurant and bar on Colaba Causeway, in the Colaba area of Mumbai, India, located across from the Colaba Police station.

It was one of the first sites attacked during the November 2008 Mumbai attacks.

It was founded in 1871 by Iranis (a term used for Zoroastrians in Mumbai who arrived in India in 19th century, as opposed to "Parsis"). These Zoroastrian Iranians came to India in the late 19th and early 20th century, and many of them opened restaurants now often termed Irani cafés. It first started out as a wholesale cooking oil store and over the years has variously been a restaurant, store and pharmacy (hence the name "Leopold Cafe & Stores").

Prior to the terrorist attack, it used to be a popular hangout for foreign tourists. After the attack, it is also now visited by many Indians to commemorate the spirit of defiance. Leopold Cafe has preserved some of the signs of the attack, unlike the Taj and Trident, where all the damage has been repaired.

It uses a Achaemenid Persian Lion Rhyton as a part of its logo to indicate its Zoroastrian affiliation.

It is one of a couple of Irani Cafes that are still doing good business, while others are fading away.

The cafe was an early site of gunfire and grenade explosions during the 2008 Mumbai attacks by terrorists on Nov 26, at about 9:30 PM. The terrorists, perhaps an hour after landing, sprayed fire inside the restaurant from outside killing 10 persons and injuring many others. The restaurant was extensively damaged during the attacks. There were blood stains on the floor and shoes left by fleeing customers.Sourav Mishra, a Reuters reporter and one of the first media witnesses of the attack, suffered severe bullet injuries. After spending one and half minutes at the Leopold Cafe, the terrorists walked to the The Taj Mahal Palace Hotel, the main target.

Mysore cafe

Mysore café is a popular South Indian Udipi restaurant in Kings Circle, Matunga, Mumbai. The restaurant was established in the 1930s and has been a popular meeting and eating joint for many generations. The restaurant is popular with students as it has a number of prestigious educational institutions close by.

Mysore café was established in the 1930s. Its founder A.Rama Nayak was then a class fourth drop out from the village of Akkar (now in Karnataka). Choosing a vantage spot near the King's circle railway station, he started making and selling idlis and dosas on plantain leaves. A few years later, he set up his first restaurant selling south Indian cuisine in Matunga. Subsequently, he set up another three restaurants in the same area of Matunga, a suburb that had a sizeable population of South Indians. These four restaurants (one for each of his sons) were named Udupi Shri Krishna (near Matunga station, now called Udupi Krishna Bhavan), Cafe Mysore (at Kings Circle), Udupi Cafe and now Idli House. Café Mysore is located at 461, Durlabh Nivas, Bhaudaji Road, Matunga while the remaining family run restaurants are all located close by in the Matunga region

The menus continues to sport simple south Indian fare including idlis, dosas, rasam, pineapple sheera, and filter coffee. Café Mysore uses a large steam press idli maker that makes 60 idlis in just eight minutes. The restaurants still source their milk from an old trusted cowshed at Jogeshwari, and their vegetables and grain from old time suppliers. As per an article that was published in Mid-Day, the floor of the restaurant is mopped 50 times daily, 100 breakfast Parcels are packed off on each Sunday for home delivery, 30 Plates of Idlis are usually served for breakfast every day, the restaurant makes a profit of 10 per cent per dish, the most time consuming dish (the onion uthapa) takes 20 minutes for the restaurant here to make, they employed 7 waiters in each shift in 2011 with each waiter working 8 hours per day.
