Coffee Beanery

Coffee Beanery is a Flushing (Mich.)-based chain of coffee shops operating in the United States, Europe, Asia, and U.S. Territories. The company was founded in 1976. Coffee Beanery locations serve espresso, fresh-brewed coffee, tea and other specialty drinks, while also selling gourmet coffee beans, tea bags, baked goods, sandwiches, soups, fresh salads and a line of branded mugs and coffee machines. The company sells coffee shop franchises and derives most of its income from selling equipment and products to the franchisees.

In 1976 JoAnne and Julius Shaw began selling specialty coffee to consumers in their first store in Dearborn, Michigan. As of February 2007, the company had 131 franchise locations in the United States and another 25 in other countries, most notably in Kuwait, Bahrain, China, Cyprus, South Korea, United Arab Emirates and Lebanon.

The store concepts offered to franchisees include retail specialty stores, coffee bars, kiosks, double-wide drive-thru and café stores.

In 1997, the company introduced a new location concept, the café store, offering an extended menu of sandwiches, salads, soups and bakery goods. The café concept differed from earlier ones, requiring additional equipment, floor space and staffing, and locations outside of malls. The café concept was not treated differently in franchisee documents, so it was difficult for potential franchisees to tell if any cafés were making money. At least one of the café franchisees later sued, claiming they had planned to buy the traditional coffee shop but were enticed on discovery day to buy the café concept instead.

In 2006, the Maryland securities commissioner determined that the company had made "material misrepresentations" to prospective franchisees in violation of state law, and ordered it to release Maryland franchisees from their contracts without penalty. In 2008, the Illinois attorney general made a similar determination. The Maryland order also directed the company to "permanently cease and desist from offering and selling" franchises in Maryland. In the judge’s latest court order, he ruled “This case is buyers’ remorse” and the case was settled in 2013.

Coffee House Positano

The Coffee House Positano was a cafe on the southern border of Malibu, California. It was opened in 1957 by Mike Dutton, a radio pioneer, and his wife, Lorees, an aspiring writer. Located on the cliff side of the Pacific Coast Highway on a 140-acre, undeveloped piece of land, (19543 Pacific Coast Highway). Positano quickly became a success even though there was no sign on the highway to indicate where it was located and the Duttons never advertised its existence. People learned of it strictly by word of mouth. Positano was fundamentally different from the some forty other coffee houses that could be found in the greater Los Angeles area. These places tended to appeal to a young crowd and were generally focused on folk music. particularly folk rock. While Positano offered some of the same things as other coffee houses – exotic coffees, deserts, sandwiches, chess games, a bookstore, poetry readings, and a place to hang out, the Duttons offered an amazing array of other activities – from avant garde theater performances like Picasso’s one-act play, Desire Trapped by the Tail, to a regularly scheduled evenings of political debate with speakers who ranged from communists to John Birchers. Writers, university professors and politicians often spoke about a vast array of topics—like anthropologist Count Taylor on the rise of black identity in the US—or authors such as John Howard Lawson, Lawrence Lipton and Anais Nin, who would read from their new works. Paintings were always on display and for sale. On the days when Positano was closed, various classes like life drawing were taught by artists such as Keith Finch. The jazz and folk music at Positano was spontaneous and free. People simply appeared, play their music and left. For two seasons, Playhouse Positano operated as an open- air theater.

The almost immediate popularity of Positano caused the Duttons to create a membership. People could visit only three times before joining. When Positano closed in 1962, the membership totaled over 2500 people. People in the entertainment business particularly those living in the Malibu area frequented the place – David and Gloria Stone Martin, John Howard Larson, and John Houseman to name a few. Some people from the European exile community like Aldous Huxley and Christopher Isherwood also visited. Many of the so-called beat poets, like Allen Ginsberg and Gregory Corso, came down from San Francisco to visit. The policy of the Duttons was to “ignore” any celebrity who showed up so that they could enjoy themselves without being hassled by their admirers.

Grounds for Coffee

imageGrounds for Coffee

Grounds for Coffee is a locally owned cooperative of coffee shop owners operating in Utah. The first Grounds for Coffee shop opened in Salt Lake City in 1989. The business currently operates as a franchise owned by Dan and Suzy Dailey, with multiple shops located in Ogden, Layton, and Sunset, Utah. One independently owned shop also operates under the Grounds for Coffee name in Clearfield, Utah. Grounds for Coffee also operates a mail-order business via its website, selling fresh roasted coffee beans.

Coffee
Tea and herbal teas

Grounds for Coffee opened its first location approximately 1989 adjacent to Liberty Park in Salt Lake City. The original owners (Bendt and Sandra Johnson) operated as a licensed retail coffee business and roaster. By the early 1990s they had nine separately owned and operated locations mostly in Salt Lake City, with a shop in both Ogden and Clearfield which carried their name, drink recipes, and line of roasted coffee beans. By the mid- to late 90s the Johnsons closed the roasting operation and left Utah. This left each existing shop to operate as an individual location. One by one they mostly closed with the exception of the shop at 3005 Harrison Blvd., Ogden owned and operated by Dan & Suzy Dailey and the Clearfield shop owned and operated by Pam McLaughlin at 375 South State St. (Lakeside Square), in Clearfield. It was at this point in time that Dan and Suzy Dailey acquired the trademarked logo and Grounds for Coffee name. They restructured the operation from a licensed business to a franchise. With only the two existing locations, Pam McLaughlin was invited but declined the offer to operate under the new franchise. She continues to operate independently from, and amicably with, the Daileys today.

In 1991, Grounds for Coffee had a coffee shop at 4881 South Redwood Road in Salt Lake City owned by Lew and Holly, which is now the location of another coffee house called Hidden Peaks Gourmet, located a few blocks from the Salt Lake Community College.

Coffee Strong

Coffee Strong is a GI coffeehouse based on the tradition of resistance coffee houses opened during the Vietnam war by antiwar veterans and active duty soldiers. Based in Lakewood, WA it was founded in 2008 by veterans returning from the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq. It is located within 300 meters of the gates at Joint Base Lewis-McChord. It is one of three currently active GI resistance coffee houses along with Under the Hood Café near Fort Hood in Texas & Off Base in Norfolk, Virginia. According to Coffee Strong board member Zoltan Grossman

The goal of the G.I. coffeehouse is to provide soldiers, their families and recent vets a place away from the base where they can learn about resources available to them, meet with G.I. rights counselors, and access alternative information. It holds weekly movie nights, and hosts speakers, hiphop, punk and folk concerts, and other events. The response from soldiers visiting the coffeehouse has so far been overwhelmingly positive.

The Coffee Strong advisory board includes linguist and dissident Noam Chomsky, Marjorie Cohn, Mike Ferner, Eva Golinger, Dahr Jamail, Antonia Juhasz, Col. Ann Wright (Ret.), and the late historian and author Howard Zinn. In 2011 filmmaker and professor of Folklore and English at the University of Oregon Lisa Gilman released the film Grounds for Resistance about Coffee Strong and featured interviews by some of its founders and reactions to it from Joint Base Lewis-McChord soldiers.

Crazy Mocha Coffee Company

imageCrazy Mocha Coffee Company

Crazy Mocha Coffee Company is a coffeehouse chain in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania region. As of February 2013, there were 29 locations, with 2 more planned. It is owned by Ken Zeff.

When possible, Crazy Mocha uses local contractors for construction and avoids opening near other independent coffee shops.

Each location has its own vibe, often themed along with the neighborhood. The Shadyside location matches the art-conscious neighborhood, South Side location has a faux-iron canopy hanging over the tables in honor of the area's industrial past, and the location at the SouthSide Works is based off a trendy Brooklyn cafe. The Bloomfield location teamed up with The Dreaming Ant, an independent video rental store.

Unlike major chain coffee shops, Crazy Mocha permits customers expansive use of the Wi-Fi system.

The Sewickley location had been lenient toward dog lovers who wished to bring their pets to the shop, at least until arousing the attention of the Allegheny County Health Department.

Crazy Mocha has been an early newcomer to urban rehabilitation in Lawrenceville and the North Side.

The 2010 opening of the North Side location was hailed as the cornerstone of a redevelopment effort in that neighborhood. The location, in renovated building, boasted arched windows and exposed brick walls. The building was acquired by developers for $16,000 and required $142,500 in repairs and renovations.

The original store was the Dancing Goats coffee shop on Ellsworth Avenue in Shadyside neighborhood of Pittsburgh. The shop had been named after the apocryphal legend of the dancing goat that heralded the beginning of coffee. It was purchased in 2000 by Ken Zeff, a merchandise buyer for J.C. Penney and native resident of Greenfield.
