Diedrich Coffee

imageDiedrich Coffee, Inc

Diedrich Coffee is a coffee company based in Irvine, CA. Its first coffee house in Orange County, CA was opened in 1983. It owns the American mall-based stores for Gloria Jean's Coffees. In Oregon, it previously ran Coffee People until nearly every location was bought and closed or converted into a Starbucks (Diedrich retained ownership of the Coffee People locations inside the Portland International Airport.)

The history of the company started with Charlotte Diedrich inheriting a coffee plantation in Costa Rica in 1916. Her son, Carl Diedrich joined the business in 1946 and purchased a coffee plantation in Antigua, Guatemala in 1966. The first coffeehouse, a roastery, opened in Newport Beach in 1972.

Diedrich Coffee, a neighborhood coffeehouse, was founded by Martin Diedrich in 1983. He took over the retail, roasting and importing facets of the family business from retiring Carl. In September 1996, Diedrich Coffee went public.

The company bought up Coffee People, a company that included Gloria Jean's Coffees, in July 1999. In June 2004, Martin Diedrich resigned his position at Diedrich Coffee.

In September 2006, Diedrich Coffee announced its plans to close its company-owned retail stores, 40 of which were sold to rival Starbucks and reopened under that brand. Franchisee-owned stores remained unchanged. The company continued as a roaster and wholesaler of coffee beans. However, a few independently owned and operated Diedrich locations remained open in California and Texas. On November 3, 2009, California-based Peet's Coffee announced that it was buying Diedrich.

On December 8, 2009, Vermont-based Green Mountain Coffee Roasters Inc. trumped the offer from Peet's Coffee and agreed to buy Diedrich for $290 million.

Drinkmore Cafe

The Drinkmore Cafe is a coffee shop on Capitol Hill in Seattle, Washington. Opened on April 1, 2000 as the Bit Star, it was reported by InfoWorld to be the first commercial business to offer free wireless internet wifi services. Although few had the equipment necessary to take advantage of this, free wireless internet became a major component of the small coffee shop business model across America. Owned and run by software executive Scott Kennedy, The Drinkmore was the headquarters of Seattle Wireless and was the Howard Dean meetup spot during his 2004 presidential campaign.

The original location, a 1905 warehouse at the corner of Bellevue Avenue East and Thomas Street, was demolished by the property owner to make way for new condominiums.

Dunn Bros

Dunn Brothers Coffee is a franchise company of coffeehouses founded in St. Paul, Minnesota, in December 1987 by brothers Ed and Dan Dunn. The first store was opened on Grand Avenue in St. Paul, after the brothers had driven an old Dodge van loaded with their belongings from Portland, Oregon, to Minnesota in search of a good, underserved location for a coffee business. They found a refurbished 1950s Probat roaster in Cincinnati, Ohio, and used it to set up that first store. The second location opened in Uptown Minneapolis in 1991 (and was temporarily the only location while the Grand Avenue store was rebuilt following a 1991 fire).

The store's locations are primarily in the American Midwest, especially Minnesota, where there are 74 locations. In the last few years stores have also opened in Texas, Tennessee, Kansas, Nebraska, North Dakota, South Dakota, Wisconsin, Missouri, and Iowa. Dunn Bros Coffee is a franchise, and most stores are locally owned and operated. One distinguishing feature that separates Dunn Bros from most of its chain competitors is that at every traditional location the coffee is roasted right in the store, usually on a daily basis. This allows customers to buy freshly roasted whole beans. Three roast levels are often available: a medium Full City, a medium-dark Vienna Roast, and a dark French Roast, which either adds a smoky flavor to the bean (French Roast) or allows subtle nuances to be distinguishable (Full City roast). Some coffee roasters can produce about a dozen roast levels, and many types of beans are considered over-roasted as French or Italian. Dunn Bros Coffee does not produce an Italian Roast on the grounds that it often produces a charred flavor in the highest grades of Arabica beans. The in-store roasting and small batch sizes typically allow for the availability of 12-15 varieties of whole beans.

Dunn Bros partners with certifiers of sustainably grown coffee in the world including Fair Trade USA, and Rainforest Alliance.

As of June 2006, Dunn Brothers Coffee was the ninth largest coffee company in the U.S., with 85 locations throughout the country.

Dutch Bros. Coffee

imageDutch Bros. Coffee

Dutch Bros. Coffee is a privately held drive-through coffee chain headquartered in Grants Pass, Oregon, United States, with company-owned and franchise locations throughout the western United States. Dutch Bros. is the country's largest privately held, drive-through coffee chain, with 284 stores in 7 western U.S. states.

Dutch Bros. was founded on February 12, 1992 by brothers Dane and Travis Boersma, third-generation dairy farmers in Grants Pass, Oregon. Originally, they worked at a coffee stand at Dutcher Creek Golf Course in Grants Pass. This is where the inspiration started, and where they would later get their business name from. They bought an espresso machine and experimented with a hundred pounds of coffee in their empty milk house in Grants Pass. After a month of handing out free samples to friends and family, the duo began serving up mochas and lattes at a pushcart set up in downtown Grants Pass. They named their company Dutch Brother's [sic] Coffee Company, or Dutch Bros. Over the next few years, permanent kiosks opened in other parts of the city, including a coffeehouse a few blocks from the original stand.

Dutch Bros. roasts all its own coffee, a three-bean blend sourced from direct relationships with Salvadorian, Brazilian, and Colombian coffee plantations. Flavored coffee drinks are made from ingredients such as Torani syrups, a blend of Dutch Chocolate milk, Oregon Chai, Pacific soy milk, and Harney & Sons teas. In October 2014, the company announced the release of Dutch Bros. Single-Serve Cups compatible with Keurig-style brewers. In 2012, the Company launched its own energy drink, Blue Rebel, and in May 2016 introduced Cold Brew Coffee.

Everyman Espresso

Everyman Espresso is a chain of coffeehouses in New York City.

The original location shares its space with the Classic Stage Company in Union Square. Another location is in SoHo.

Owner Penix has a tattoo which reads, I (picture of coffee cup) NY. Penix made a sign to advertise Everyman Espresso modeled after his tattoo. The Empire State Development Corporation represented by CMG Worldwide claimed that this was a trademark violation of their I (heart) NY graphic, asked for Everyman Espresso to remove the graphic, and requested a cut of all money made for violating their logo.

Some reviews of the coffee at Everyman Espresso have been positive.

Owner Sam Penix is one of New York City's best known baristas. He is from Florida.
