Lance Inc.

Lance, Inc. is an American snack food company headquartered in Charlotte, North Carolina. They manufacture snacks such asCaptain's Wafers, Cape Cod Potato Chips, Tom's Potato Chips, Archway Cookies, and Stella D'oro,

Philip Lance and Salem Van Every, Lance's son-in-law, started selling single serve snacks in 1913. Two years later, they opened the doors of the Lance Packaging Company in Charlotte, North Carolina. In 1943, Philip Lance Van Every took over leadership of Lance, still a privately held company. Today, Lance, Inc., is a leader in the snack food industry and one of the largest manufacturers and distributors of snack foods in the United States, especially in the South.

On March 6, 2001, Lance Inc restated its earnings for the fourth quarter and full-year 2000 by two cents a share, citing accounting 'inaccuracies'.

Although Lance, Inc., is publicly traded, the Van Every family still maintains an active interest in the company. Lance has paid quarterly dividends to stockholders for decades. The dividend has been $0.16 per share since 2000.

On July 22, 2010, Lance announced that it would merge with Snyder's of Hanover. The resulting company, to be known as Snyder's-Lance Inc., would remain publicly traded under the LNCE symbol. Headquarters would remain in Charlotte. On December 2, Lance shareholders approved the deal that created the country's second largest snack food company. The merged company became Snyder's-Lance.

Many snack cracker products manufactured by Lance are commonly referred to as "Nabs", a genericized trademark name for Nabisco snack crackers. The term originated in 1924 when the National Biscuit Company (Nabisco) introduced a snack, put in a 5-cent sealed packet called "Peanut Sandwich Packet". They soon added a second, "Sorbetto Sandwich Packet". These packets allowed salesmen to sell to soda fountains, road stands, milk bars, lunch rooms, news stands etc. Sales increased and in 1928 the company adopted and started to use the name NAB, which immediately won the approval of the public.

Archway Cookies

imageArchway Bakeries

Archway Cookies is an American cookie manufacturer, founded in 1936 in Battle Creek, Michigan. Since December 2008, it has been a subsidiary of Lance Inc., a snack-food company, who in turn merged with Snyder's of Hanover to form Snyder's-Lance. Archway is best known for its variations of oatmeal cookies.

In 1936, Harold and Ruth Swanson began baking soft oatmeal cookies and doughnuts out of their home's garage in Battle Creek. By the late 1940s, they had discontinued baking donuts and just concentrated on cookies. They had fifteen different varieties of cookies by 1949. In the 1950s they licensed their cookie recipes and begin selling baking franchises in Indiana, Wisconsin, and Canada.

In 1954, Swanson, a maker of frozen dinners, sued Swanson cookies for name infringement. As part of a settlement, the Swansons agreed to change the name of their bakery company to Archway Cookies. The name 'Archway' was chosen by Harold and Ruth because the original Swanson cookie labels featured an arch above the name ... and the same arch design was retained on the first generation Archway cookie label designs.

Throughout the 1950s, Archway continued to grow and sell more franchises. At the height of its franchise expansion, Archway Cookies were being manufactured nationally by thirty-three separate bakeries, whose territories were generally drawn along state boundaries.

Archway's flagship varieties were Oatmeal, Date-Filled Oatmeal, Frosty Lemon, Molasses and Pecan Ice Box, with Oatmeal varieties accounting for thirty percent of product sales. The company emphasized its home-made and freshness approach to baking cookies, and often used the term 'Archway Homestyle Cookies'. Most varieties were packaged in two stacks of six large cookies, and wrapped in clear cellophane with a freshness code printed on the front label. Many varieties, such as Ruth's Golden Oatmeal, were 'state fair winning' recipes, selected from among entries of company-sponsored baking competitions. Archway's product line quickly expanded to several dozen varieties, including many classic and unique selections; Peanut Jumble, Rocky Road, Mississippi Mud Cake, Fudge Nut Bar, German Chocolate, Black Walnut Ice Box, Date Nut Bar, Iced Spice, New Orleans Cake, Pineapple Filled, Sour Cream, Soft Sugar, and Cookie Jar Hermit.

Cape Cod Potato Chips is a snack food company most famously known for their brand of potato chips. The company is headquartered in Hyannis, Massachusetts, on Cape Cod. Cape Cod Potato Chips is a subsidiary of Snyder's-Lance.

The company's logo is a woodcut of Nauset Light with the company name in Caslon Antique.

Cape Cod Potato Chips was founded in 1980 with the idea of offering healthier foods made with little processing, Lynn had started a natural foods store in the 1970s. Steve Bernard pursued adding potato chips to the mix after tasting a natural potato chip from a successful company based in Hawaii. In 1980, he sold his auto parts business and established Cape Cod Potato Chips with an 800-square-foot (74 m2) storefront in Hyannis, Massachusetts that could reach tourists, an industrial potato slicer he had bought for $3,000 and almost no knowledge of the snack food business other than what he learned in a week-long course on potato chip making at Martin's Potato Chips in Thomasville, Pennsylvania.

Unlike typical commercial brands made using a continuous frying process, in which potato slices travel through a tub of oil on a conveyor belt, Cape Cod chips are cooked in batches in kettles, frying them in a shallow vat in oil while stirring with a rake, producing a crunchier chip. Snack Food Association president James A. McCarthy noted that Bernard "didn't invent the kettle chip, but he was involved in bringing it back to prominence."
